Topic: The What and the How of dialing up innovation in your organisation 



Innovation is often seen as the realm of small nimble businesses and new and exiting niche markets. But for the vast majority of organizations the need is to bring innovation year on year to their existing product lines to create either a new buzz around essentially a commodity product or to  achieve cost saving whilst at the same time avoiding any hiccups in the smooth running of the product lifecycles. Alberto will start by assessing Innovation In large Multinational Apparel Companies taking a look at how innovation can be encouraged by creating an organic culture of innovation. Then more specifically he will he will examine the critical Interface of Science – Fashion Design.

 True product innovation really flourishes at the border between technology and design and pioneering design is often supported by equally pioneering applied science. The importance of understanding and working on this logical/emotional dichotomy will be explained with practical examples.



Alberto De Conti is arguably the only biochemist who moved from genes to jeans. After a few years spent in the biotech laboratories of Milan, Vienna and Berlin optimizing the fermentation production of cellulolytic pools and gathering the knowledge associated with the textile applications of those enzymes Alberto joined took Levi Strauss & Co as a finishing engineer. It was during these years that sophisticated garment finishing techniques were first introduced into jean manufacturing.

After working in product management, he designed and managed the very first approach to structured innovation management within Levi Strauss Europe, which was subsequently adopted globally. The most significant achievements were the first wearable electronic ever commercialized (Levi’s® ICD+ and Levi’s® Redwire™), the Levi’s® ECO™ collection and the Levi’s® Curve ID™ line.

As Global Director of Business Development & Innovation, he led the development and implementation of global breakthrough strategies for the Levi’s® Men’s business with the goal of retaining hard-won competitive advantages while pursuing incremental and “brand-appropriate” growth opportunities.
Alberto is currently the founder and owner ADC Alchemy, a provider of consumer-relevant product innovation to both the apparel and chemical/textile industries. Alberto holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the university of Milan and an international MBA from the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School.
He has two children and lives in Brussels, Belgium.
